Assume you will be using your facility for your concluding graduate experience project. Discuss your process. What are some of the policies and/or procedures of your organization that will impact or be impacted by your project? What information or data will you need to gather and from whom will you get it? Whom will you engage in the process? ASSIGNMENT Due to the rapid pace of change in the healthcare industry, challenges often arise. Therefore, leaders in the healthcare industry need to conduct frequent performance reviews of their organizations in order to identify areas in which there is room for improvement. Integrating transformational leadership into an organization is not always easy. The team of a leader who makes use of transformational leadership strategies has a better chance of being motivated and moving forward. Members of the staff that communicate with their management team in a manner that is courteous and productive report feeling less stressed out while at work. Employees report higher levels of job satisfaction when they believe that the leadership team at their company is one that can effect positive change. The importance of working together as a team is emphasized heavily by transformational leadership. The incorporation of transformative leaders into the organization's purpose, vision, and values is something that administrators need to be aware of in order to understand how promoting the formulation and execution of creative viewpoints may improve patient care. According to Steinmann et al. (2018), effective leaders have an effect on the followers' degree of work satisfaction, level of loyalty to the company, and level of proactiveness as a result of the successful completion of priority goals. The failure to meet the standard is due to the very high number of dissatisfied workers, which also plays a role in the declining employee retention rate. The management team has come to the realization that there are many instances of anguish among the personnel due to the fact that the impacts of burnout have moved to the care that is provided to patients. Hello All, My project will proceed in a manner that is determined by how the facility handles project development activities. I work in Women’s Services at a facility that does not do Couplet Care. The department has previously tried to implement Couplet Care without success. I have actually been through this transition at another facility I used to work at; therefore, I feel I can see this project through. Research into the aforementioned procedures is something I will need to do if I want to guarantee that my project adheres to all of the organization's criteria for project planning. It is important for me to include employees from the company in order to get input on the parameters that will have the most significant impact on the job that I do. The team for the project will be comprised of these persons. Employees that participate in the final product and the alterations made as a consequence of facility projects perceive a strengthening of their sense of autonomy. It will be vital to have information on the institution's standards for project planning, as well as the capabilities and obstacles that could impact the advancement of my project. It is expected that the department in charge of project management would be able to supply the required information. The availability of sufficient resources and the participation of the group in the project are two of the fundamental capabilities that have the potential to influence the process. A project may succeed without proper management. Effective project management leads to success. Project success depends on good management. A knowledgeable coordinator, personnel, and competence should lead to good project management. These characteristics vary by type of project, purpose, and quantity of projects handled, as mentioned by Radujkovica and Sjekavica (2017). It is possible that my lack of expertise in the planning phase of projects will be a barrier. The lack of clarity around the project's goals presents several possible risks that might also have an impact on the way my project develops. The possibility exists that my project will not be a suitable match for the facility, and that I will not be able to obtain stakeholders for its completion as a result of this. (2019), need both technical abilities, such the ability to keep costs and schedules within acceptable parameters, and interpersonal and leadership qualities. Inexperience in project planning and completion, in general, will likely be a challenge for me. According to Radujković and Sjekavica (2017), there are four parts to project management: planning, organization, monitoring, and control. Project management approaches affect project success. Continual project development necessitates project management. Organizational success requires both strong leadership and a conducive atmosphere for completing projects. It is conceivable for efforts to be unsuccessful; but it is far more often than not for such failures to result in opportunities for improvement. I agree with you on this point. It is necessary to keep this in mind because it is one of the most important but also one of the most overlooked aspects of the process of conceiving and carrying out initiatives. In order to come up with original ideas, employees at my organization follow a process that has been coined the Clinical Advancement Program, or CAP for short. This tactic was devised in order to make the process of coming up with original ideas in a way that is less streamlined by nursing staff. Monetary incentives are a plus for participation and completion of a project. Employees must first submit an application and subsequent proposals will be subject to a review and approval process before they can take part. Depending on the characteristics of the project, it may be possible for either individuals or collaborative groups to make contributions to it. The participants get the opportunity to reflect on the project and discuss the many methods in which the concept may be implemented. During the course of the process, it will be necessary to conduct an analysis of the effectiveness of the project and to determine whether or not it was successful. This will be done in such a way that it will be possible to achieve this goal while at the same time fulfilling the criteria of CAP. Guanci and Bjork (2019) describe project management as a temporary undertaking to develop a unique product, service, or outcome, according to PMI. Project managers must know ideas, tools, and procedures. Authentic leaders with a positive attitude and good communication abilities are needed. When a staff member has an idea for a project it must be presented to a board and then undergoes the kaizen process. In this process a team is gathered to include individuals who are directly impacted by the project and members who work within the clinical administration of the hospital to offer various perspectives and ideas. The kaizen process offers the team the opportunity to think through the project, evaluate current policies, and brainstorm methods to implement the project. This procedure occurs over a week span where the team meets daily to discuss the project. An organizational strength in this is that it is a collaborative approach and allows various opinions and ideas to be shared. A threat of this is that it is very time limited in prepping and preparing to implement the project and opportunities for success may be missed out on due to this time frame. Information that is gathered during this time is the project idea, what resources are needed to implement the project, who is impacted by the project, and what is the goal of the project. This data will be gathered through team collaboration and then used to plan effective project implementation. Engagement in the process will first occur within the kaizen team but will then be spread to the units that are impacted by the project. The nursing staff and patients will be key in project engagement. It will be important in the process to measure project effectiveness and determine if the project achieved what it was intended to or did it fail and if it failed, determine if there is anything to be learned from the failure. Project planning within an organization can be very difficult as it requires time, effort, and compliance with organizational policies and goals. While projects can fail, it also offers opportunities for growth and that is one of the greatest aspects in creating and implementing projects. You are right in what you stated regarding the difficulty project planning can be for the organization. As leaders in the organization, it is imperative that we ensure that the processes go as smoothly as possible. The kaizen process you described and explained is interesting and seems like an awesome approach to utilize with project developments in the organization. I personally believe that it is imperative to include members of the staff and organization in decisions and process changes, especially those that they are directly affected by. The kaizen process you described sounds like a great process for leaders to implement with staff for decision making. Have you personally been involved with the kaizen process in your organization for projects? If so, did you find being involved in the process helped you have a better understanding of the change to better implement it? By developing a clear and concise plan, nurses can ensure that their projects are well-organized and have a greater chance of success. I believe that only a week to get a plan together and implement it has to be hard. I do like the fact that the team meets daily to ensure that the project is at the forefront of everyone's mind. I also like the idea that it starts out with a small project team and then goes to the affected units within the facility. I also agree that any project staff and patients will determine if it will be successful or not. I also like that if a project fails it is looked at to see if there is anything that can be done to make it successful before it is thrown out completely. I believe that projects are created to improve the facility as a whole. How long of a process do you believe the kaizen process should have before implementing a new project? Do you feel that this is a successful way to plan projects for your organization? Kaizen or “good change” is designed to make continuous improvement and was a result of America’s involvement in assisting in rebuilding industry in post-war Japan. Dr. Deming and other leaders in training and industry are credited with the remarkable recovery Japan experienced in a few short decades. The Japanese perfected what Deming and others taught. In the early 90s, I was trained in what is called Total Quality Management (TQM) based on Deming’s teachings and philosophy of continual process improvement. I would say it is the “American” version of Kaizen. The principles of both Kaizen and TQM are similar in that they use Plan, Do, Check, Act, and employee empowerment. This management concept should be an intuitive thing for nurses, as there is a similarity to the nursing process: assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate, and we empower nurses to act within their scope and under protocols rather than wait for orders. For example in the ED, we assess the patient as tachycardica, hypotensive and febrile, coming from a skilled nursing facility with a foley in place with cloudy, dark urine. The assessment finds the patient meets sepsis criteria. The plan is already know (sepsis protocol) so they implement it. The nurse obtains IV access, labs and blood cultures, and requests orders for antibiotic/fluid resuscitation from the provider. This is done without waiting for the provider to come and tell them to do it. I was curious about how SWOT applies to your projects. Specifically the O-Opportunity piece. Does your organization look at outside competition or internally to other departments or regions if your system is larger for ideas or examples to improve a process or make a change? In my efforts to improve retention and recruitment, I look at our other facitlities in the region and, I think more importantly, the competition in the local market. Regarding the competition, I see them as both T or Threat in my SWOT, but also as an opportunity. If they are doing something effective, how can I replicate or improve on it to my advantage. That is an opportunity to gain information without having to create something from scratch. I also found it curious that there is a time constraint to this at your organization, as Kaizen is designed for continuous improvement. Perhaps I am assuming the actual limitations. Does your organization allow for longer periods if the project meets barriers, etc? One thing we used TQM for when I was in the military was proper staffing to reduce the time it took to identify and report soviet submarines using undersea surveillance systems. Our project lasted several months. I got to experience the mindset of continual improvement from the Japanese perspective when I was stationed in Japan and watched how they modified practices and drilled/practiced to shave seconds and minutes of the time it took to correctly detect, identify, and report a submarine. Even the best Americans I worked with would have been worn out by our allies’ dedication and devotion. Thank you again for your post and the memories it brought back.
