This week we will look at the topics of innovations and technology in healthcare. As we incorporate innovations and new technology into our practice settings, we see nurses utilizing change processes in order to educate staff, update protocols, and integrate these applications into best practices for patient care. Nurse Daniel explores innovative ideas related to his change process and explores the technology involved. Please continue to follow his collaboration and planning. For this week’s discussion I chose the category on Daily Air Temperatures and Heat Index, from the CDC Wonder site (2018). I feel this information would be extremely beneficial when working with the elderly patrons/patients in my local community. It is extremely important that the elderly get access to adequate air and cooling systems in the heat of the summer months, as this could affect their ability to breathe and stay alive. With this information, I would be equipped to better service this age category and help secure their safety and well-being during their time of need. According to Fronczek et al. (2017), Telehealth Resource Centers defined Telehealth as “a collection of means or methods for enhancing healthcare, public health, and health education delivery and support using telecommunications technology” (Fronczek, Rouhana, & Kitchin, 2017; Telehealth Resource Centers, 2016). This is a perfect example of public health safety. It would be my job to ensure that the family, next of kin, or neighbors are aware of their needs. Therefore, they could also check in on the patient, to be certain they were getting the appropriate temperature-controlled environment for optimal care. How might nurses utilizing telehealth benefit from these resources? I could advise my patients to take it easy during the summer months by limiting their exposure time to being outdoors, self-monitoring for any allergen causations and signs/symptoms of heat exhaustion, drink plenty of fluids, avoid being out and active during the hottest part of the day, wear a hat/sunscreen, and wear appropriate clothing. I would suggest they not go out unless it is necessary, especially if the temperature reaches a certain degree, just to be safe. Address what you find innovative about the link. The site offers a plethora of options for selecting information based on the type of temperature scale you want such as Fahrenheit or Celsius. You can make selections based on the county, state, and region in which you live. You can indicate the year, month, day in which you are researching. Moreover, you can indicate the minimum and maximum heat index, and air temperatures you are searching for. In all, this information can help me better serve the elder patrons in my community. According to the EPA (2017), “Evidence indicates the air quality alerts are helpful and advocacy from health care professionals is powerful” (para. 17). Feel free to share some of your nursing innovation ideas! It could be beneficial to set up a community buddy-system/phone-chain that people can gain (no charge) access to that will offer the temperature and air quality predicted for that day. This information can be passed from neighbor-to-neighbor, while aiding one another, if need be. This would be a two-fold process, in that it puts people in connection with each offer, being social and active in the community can help prevent loneliness for this age group, as well. It was discussed in one of our previous lessons that when elder people are lonely, they can be seen in the hospital setting more often. Imagine if they had air quality issues coupled with loneliness, they would be regular frequent fliers. I believe that with the aid of the buddy- system/phone-chain we can reduce the number of admissions for this age group, by helping them stay healthy and engaged. Many of the elderly do not realize how heat can have an effect on them. They sit outside at the hottest time of the day, but it is not only the elderly I often see the runners out jogging when it is the hottest time of the day. I don't know if they are testing themselves to see if it affects their speed if they want to sweat to lose more weight. When I was in Brazil and the two days it was 131 degrees all I wanted was water and shade. It would be good to have information sheets about the heat, drinking plenty of water, and resting. The CDC site does offer a lot of information and it is printable so that you can use it freely. Good nursing innovation. A few years ago my finance and I look our children and both our mothers to Disney, it was in August and the temperature was a lot. Although we took breaks and kept hydrated it was too hot for my mother-in-law. As we waited to go back to the hotel she fainted. Had we used this resource we could have encouraged her to take more breaks, drink additional water or brought her back to the room for more of a break. With this information coming from the CDC site she may have been more open to our advice on taking it easy. I think she was just excited and wanted to keep up with us. However, it was my younger sister who collapsed on us at EPCOT. We got her back to the hotel, thanks to a Disney escort, but it altered the remainder of our trip. So, we made the most of it by hanging at the hotel, lounging by the pool, and floating in the lazy river. Just not in the heat of the day. When she returned home, she was diagnosed with HTN, DM and some renal insufficiency that has since then been resolved. Therefore, she got serious about health. She lost a ton of weight, which enabled her to stop the insulin treatment. Her BP is more manageable and she has not had any renal issues since. Thankfully, mom is going strong! I recall it was a hot day that day, I am thankful she recovered quickly and is now aware of the fact that the heat can affect her, so she is better able to gauge her activities by monitoring the forecast for high temperatures. And...she lives in Texas where it is blazing hot in the summers, so she has to be careful. Being a Texas resident puts her in jeopardy with air pollution issues as well. Conde (2012) wrote, “Each year in Texas, Dr. Stafford adds, air pollution from a variety of sources, including coal-fired power plants and diesel engines, triggers heart attacks, asthma attacks, and other lung conditions, causing thousands of hospitalizations and emergency department visits” (para. 4). With that being said, my sister would benefit greatly from the CDC site. I am sure she does not want to add respiratory concerns to her health concerns. She can add air quality to her daily monitoring. According to the UCAR Center for Science (2020), “Heat waves often lead to poor air quality” (para. 10). Thanks for sharing your story.
