Ethics in Healthcare: A Formal Assessment and Reflective Response Student Name ETHIC 445 Principles of Ethics Professor Harris Date My personal moral theory is a mantra I try to embody for my own well-being and that of others. My mantra includes preserving what I deem to be the most sacred virtues: honesty and respect. Honesty is a virtue that allows for relationships- whether familial, romantic, etc.- to bloom and flourish. Honesty with oneself allows for one to uphold an innate sense of integrity. Conversely, respect is the fuel that maintains these relationships. Relationships are maintained alive when they are nurtured, with respect and honesty being the very tethers that give them life. In terms of ethical theories, I believe deontology applies best to the virtue of honesty. Deontology emphasizes that all lying is wrong- even if the lie could bring about a greater good. Oftentimes, we may be told white lies by loved ones in an attempt to “protect” us… Sometimes, we ourselves tell white lies for the same reason. However, my personal mantra reminds me to tell the truth at all times. In doing so, I can uphold the revered virtue that is honesty. As for the virtue of respect, I believe the principles of nonmaleficence and justice best apply to it. I believe respect is at the core of these two principles; they are interchangeable and you can
