Who is a Progressive? Chamberlain College of Nursing HIST 405N: United States History Date Who is a Progressive? There was a change in American life after the civil war with industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. This change was a structure of who lived in the United States and what they did for a living. This structure came with a wealth of problems, including inequality, unsafe working conditions, and living conditions. During the 1890s reformers began to advocate for remedies to these social issues. This was known as the Progressives Era. This reform lasted through the 1920s. There were many different items that the Progressives worked on. Progressive didn't all advocate for the same goals nor solutions to the problems. There were influential female reformers that help immigrants, children and women, the conservationist who preserve national parks, muckrakers which are the journalists, and politicians to name a few. The one common achievement was to improve society. Although, each had their perception of what that looked like. For both the Progressive and anti-Progressive a change was evident. Characteristics of a Progressive According to Roosevelt, Progressivism meant the use of science, engineering, technology, and the new social sciences to encourage modernization and find alternatives to corruption and inefficiency in politics (The Library of Congress, 2018). Consequently, Roosevelt trained as a biologist which made him an ideal progressive. Most Americans saw Roosevelt as leading the Progressive movement.
