Week 4 The Lymphatic System Your Name Chamberlain University College of Nursing BIOS 255: Anatomy & Physiology III with Lab Ojeen Simman, M.D. DateInitial Post Instructions Choose one of the following topics for your initial post: How do the various components of the lymphatic system operate? We have talked about many organ systems. In what ways are components of the lymphatic system involved in many other organ systems? Try to focus on one element of this system and provide an in-depth view of its contribution to our overall health. How do the various elements of the nonspecific immune system function in providing daily protection against a variety of pathogens? Each student should provide a unique aspect of the nonspecific immune system and educate the rest of us concerning its function and how effective (or ineffective) it is against one class of pathogens. Components and function of the Lymphatic System: The lymphatic system consists of a fluid (lymph), vessels that transport the lymph, and organs that contain lymphoid tissue. Lymph Lymph is a fluid similar in composition to blood plasma. It is derived from blood plasma as fluids pass through capillary walls at the arterial end. As the interstitial fluid begins to accumulate, it is picked up and removed by tiny lymphatic vessels and returned to the blood. As soon as the interstitial fluid enters the lymph capillaries, it is called lymph. Returning the fluid to the blood prevents edema and helps to maintain normal blood volume and pressure. Lymphatic Vessels Lymphatic vessels, only carry fluid away from the tissues. The smallest lymphatic vessels are the lymph capillaries, which begin in the tissue spaces as blind-ended sacs.
